President Barack Obama signed into law a bill that allows food companies and producers to use QR codes, 1-800 numbers, or on-package text or symbols to label food products that contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Nearly 300 consumer, health, farmer, and environmental organizations and food companies representing hundreds of thousands of Americans urged President Obama to veto the bill because it does not provide the mandatory, on-package text labeling that nine out of ten Americans want and that citizens from 64 other countries already have.

Melissa Diane Smith, health journalist, holistic nutrition expert, and the author of Going Against GMOs: The Fast-Growing Movement to Avoid Unnatural Genetically Modified “Foods” to Take Back Our Food and Health, offers insights on the controversial issues surrounding GMOs, the new law, and how people can learn to avoid GMOs when they shop.

What are GMOs and why are they important?

GMOs are genetically modified organisms, also known as genetically modified foods. GMOs look the same as foods grown naturally, but they are created in a laboratory and very different on the inside: They’re most often genetically engineered to be herbicide tolerant or to produce their own internal insecticide. GMOs were introduced in 1996 and are widely used in our food supply now, but most people don’t know they’ve been eating them because GMOs haven’t been labeled.

The FDA has not conducted safety studies on GM foods. Instead, it leaves determining their safety up to the companies that make them. Animal research points to the potential for significant health risks from eating GM foods, and there are environmental, farmer’s rights, and food security concerns associated with them as well. More than three dozen countries in the world have banned the cultivation of GM crops. Concerns about the risks posed by GMOs have created a growing movement of people in this country who want to avoid eating them.

Will the new law make it easier for consumers who want to avoid GMOs when they shop?

You would think so, but for the most part, no, it won’t. The goal of the act was to establish a uniform national standard for disclosure of GM food ingredients, but the law doesn’t accomplish that goal. There are so many problems and loopholes with the law that it has often been called the Denying Americans the Right to Know (or DARK) Act. The law replaces clearly worded state laws with what the Center for Food Safety calls “a vague multi-year bureaucratic process specifically designed to provide less transparency to consumers.”

The law overturns Vermont’s recently enacted GMO labeling law that required on-package labeling with the words “partially produced with genetic engineering.” Many national companies, such as Campbell Soup, Mars, PepsiCo, Nestle, and General Mills, were already starting to label their products nationwide to comply with the Vermont law. But the new law overrides Vermont’s law and other state laws, and gives companies other disclosure options they can use that aren’t instantly understood by consumers.

If a company decides to label a product with a QR (Quick Response) code that is only readable with a smart phone, people who don’t have a smart phone won’t be able to scan products to get the information about GMOs they want. According to Pew Research Center, only 50% of people with low incomes in the U.S. own a smartphone; only 52% of rural Americans own a smartphone; and only 27% of seniors own a smartphone. Even those who do own smartphones are not guaranteed consistent access to the Internet. Consumer groups and activists such as Rev. Jesse Jackson have spoken out about how the law discriminates against low-income, rural, minority, and elderly populations.

Is there any way that GMOs can be avoided easily? What are the most common foods that contain GMOs?

It’s not easy to do at first, but, yes, GMOs can be identified and avoided even without mandatory labeling. In fact, a growing movement of people have been doing that the past several years, and many companies now realize that selling and voluntarily labeling products that don’t contain GMOs boosts sales of those products and gives those companies a competitive edge. So, labeling has gradually been occurring on a voluntary basis because of increased consumer demand.

To avoid GMOs, shoppers need to learn that there are 11 primary at-risk GM foods commonly found in grocery stores, and they can remember those foods as 3 Cs, 2 Ss, 2 As, 2 Ps, a Y and a Z. Those foods are:

  • Corn (as in corn oil, cornmeal, cornstarch, corn syrup, hominy, polenta, and other corn-based ingredients)
  • Canola (as in canola oil)
  • Cottonseed (as in cottonseed oil)
  • Sugar Beets (as in “sugar” in an ingredient, which is almost certainly a combination of sugar from both sugar cane and GM sugar beets)
  • Soybeans (as in soybean oil, soy protein, soy lecithin, soy milk, tofu, and other soy-based ingredients)
  • Alfalfa, which is fed to livestock
  • Apple, which will be arriving in some stores this year
  • Papaya (from Hawaii and China)
  • Potatoes, which were sold in 10 states last year and will be sold in a larger number this year
  • Yellow Squash and Zucchini

Consumers can avoid the genetically modified foods entirely or choose those foods only when they are labeled USDA Organic or Non-GMO Project Verified. Avoiding processed convenience foods goes a long way in helping you avoid the most common GMOs.

What’s the difference between USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified foods?

Products that carry the Non-GMO Project Verified label are independently verified to be in compliance with North America’s only third party standard for GMO avoidance, including testing of at-risk ingredients.

Products that have the USDA Organic seal cannot contain any GMO ingredients. They also must be produced without irradiation, sewage sludge, antibiotics, growth hormones, and synthetic chemical fertilizers.  However, some GM crops such as corn can spread through wind drift and contaminate organic crops, and organic certification does not require testing for GMOs. So, for the most protection against GMOs, choose products with both the Non-GMO Project Verified label and the USDA Organic label—or just avoid foods made with the 11 direct sources of GMOs.

What else is important to know about how to avoid GMOs?

In addition to the direct sources of GMOs, there are also indirect sources of GMOs that can be avoided.  Conventional meat, eggs, and dairy products are often raised on feed that contains GMOs.  The best way to avoid these is to switch to eating organically raised beef and chicken, wild-caught fish, and organic eggs.  Look for meat clearly labeled as organic, and preferably organic and 100% grass-fed. Or look for fish, poultry, eggs, and meat labeled as Non-GMO Project Verified.

“Shopping non-GMO requires some effort and learning,” Ms. Smith says. “GMOs are everywhere—people will be surprised and amazed to find out that they are in virtually all stores and all restaurants, and have made it into most of the foods that most of us eat.  It does take time to change longstanding habits, but the more we avoid GMOs, the better we get at it, and the more second nature it becomes. If you want to avoid GMOs, don’t hesitate to start somewhere—even if it’s just eating one non-GMO or organic meal a day.”

Whole30: Weekly Recap

This past week was more like Whole1.5 than Whole30. I will not fret though — something is better than nothing. I am making positive steps toward better food choices. Baking for my daughter’s 7th birthday caused me slip up — it’s hard to keep from tasting the cookie dough and homemade chocolate icing!

But overall, healthful it was a good week. Here are a few of my meals.

Whole30: Work Week Recap

Today is my Whole30 Day 7, obesity and I really like this program (minus my lack of Starbucks). This past work week I ate a lot of leftovers from Day 1, discount Day 2 and Day 3 with a few new additions:Whole30 breakfastMost mornings I ate the leftover fritatta, unhealthy but this morning (since it’s a snow day and didn’t have to rush off to the office), I made bacon and eggs and served it with half a Cara Cara orange.

At work, I took apples and almond butter or carrots and guacamole for a snack. Yesterday, however, I packed a Yumbox full of Whole30 approved treats that I picked up at Little Rock’s new Natural Grocer. Whole30 snacksI had Epic Chicken Bits, dried mango, dried cinnamon apples, sliced green apple, spicy pumpkin seeds and lime flavored La Croix. (I like this whole green vibe too.) Good thing I had these provisions since it was “Donut Thursday” at the office. 😉

Dinners this week were really good! Whole30 steak and potatoesOne night I made this juicy steak topped with garlic and shallots served with zoodles and baked potato wedges. And my dog was so happy to eat the extra fat off my steak. Whole30 burger saladLast night I made burgers seasoned with Magic Mushroom Powder and red bell pepper. I served it on a bed of spinach with a little drizzle of olive oil and balsamic, then topped it with grilled onions. OMG — I’ll do this one again soon!

One thing I had this week that I didn’t like so much was an Epic Pulled Pork Pineapple Bar. It was okay, but I probably won’t buy it again. I really like the Epic Chicken Bits though. EPIC pork barEPIC Chicken BitsI also ate a couple of Whole30 approved Lara bars: Cashew Cookie and Pecan Pie.

I’ve been so busy this week that I’ve neglected to drink enough water. That’s my goal for the coming week — to drink at least 80 oz of water a day.

Tonight Anthony and I are going to our monthly supper club. My sweet friend Micaiah is cooking a gluten-free/paleo-friendly meal just for me and Krecia (who is gluten intolerant). Instead of wine, I’m taking a bottle of sparkling water.

Whole30: Day 2 Recap

Here’s a look at my Whole30 Day 2 menu:

Whole30 breakfastBreakfast: Two fried eggs, hepatitis bacon and orange slices. Whole30 lunchLunch: Baked chicken over lettuce with a drizzle homemade balsamic dressing (just balsamic vinegar and olive oil), try avocado slices and leftover mashed sweet potatoes (sweet potatoes, caramelized onions, coconut milk and ghee). I sprinkled “Magic Mushroom Powder” over the top.magic mushroom powderMagic Mushroom Powder is my new go-to seasoning. I got the recipe from Nom Nom Paleo blog. I made a big batch of it and put it in a Mason jar by the stove. Snack was once again green apple slices with almond butter and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. apple and almond butterDinner was a home run with all the Valleys! I made Cauliflower Chicken Chowder from The Healthy Foodie blog. This is a keeper recipe — Whole30 or not. I still miss my Starbucks though.

Our Big Fat Valley Thanksgiving

My husband Anthony comes from a BIG family. He has 12 siblings, hygiene and Thanksgiving is THE DAY for the Valleys to get together. This year though, viagra here several of the siblings couldn’t make it. Nevertheless, we had a houseful of Valleys at Sandra’s house in Helena, Arkansas, yesterday. Niguel Valley is a professional photographer, so lucky for us he captured the entire day in beautiful photos.

Pop Up Party

It was a random Wednesday and I had just gotten my Spain box from Try the World, this so I thought…

My sister-in-law Ines was born in Spain and is half Spanish, so I told her to come over. Then I just posted on social media an open invitation for my girlfriends to join us at my house in two hours. I ran by the grocery store to pick up a baguette and brie. Then I used the ingredients in my Spain box to make my spread.

I sliced the baguette into rounds and brushed it with the Spanish olive oil. On half of the bread rounds, I also added the tomato spread. That all went into the oven to toast up a bit.

Then I placed the almond torron candy, the little “Ines” cakes, and tuna on a plate. (I know, weird combo, but I was in a hurry.)

I topped the brie with the orange blossom jam, and surrounded it with the bread. The tomato-topped bread went on it’s own platter. I grabbed some napkins, little plates and glasses, and  bottle of red wine. My friends brought more wine because…it’s wine and you don’t want to run out. IMG_2039Besides Ines, three more girls came over. We ate, drank, laughed. Our kids joined in the fun too. My husband found a Spanish playlist online and hooked up the Bose speakers. It was a fiesta! And we ate ALL THE FOOD. IMG_2040IMG_2046I look forward to my next Try the World box and another “It’s a random weeknight, so let’s have a pop up party” party.

 

The First Supper Club

Hatchery Tasting BoxAfter reading For The Love by Jen Hatmaker, cure I wanted to start a supper club. Like Jen, I find cooking relaxing, and it’s rewarding to share a thoughtfully-prepared meal with people who will appreciate it. I emailed my friend Micaiah since I knew she was reading For The Love also. She immediately said yes to the idea, so we brainstormed a few other couples to join us. I purposely suggested three other couples that I want to get to know better, and Micaiah thought that was a good idea. Sometimes we get so caught up in our little circles, and it’s nice to branch out and build new friendships.

I volunteered to start us off and host the first supper club. The host does all the cooking. The guests bring the beer and wine. I pulled out my P. Allen Smith cookbook and picked four recipes — three of which were new to me.

I started with a lovely pear salad. It was easy and probably my favorite thing of the night. It had romaine, sliced pears, toasted pecans, blue cheese, and a apple cider & honey vinaigrette. I will make this again this week. I adore this salad.

For the main course, I made a roasted red pepper and prosciutto frittata and paired it with creamy Parmesan grits. I was spooked that the frittata would never cook through — it baked three or four times longer than the recipe called for. I think that it was because my cast iron skillet was too small, so the frittata was thicker than it needed to be. But thankfully, it turned out perfect and everyone enjoyed it. IMG_1856For dessert, I made two sweet potato pies. This was the one recipe that I had made before. It’s easy and delicious. IMG_1852Dinner conversation and wine flowed easily. We discussed how couples met, racial reconciliation and the church, careers and kids. One of our supper club couples couldn’t make it, but hopefully they will be there next month. Micaiah is hosting in November. She is a wonderful chef, so it should be wonderful. IMG_1857

Eating my way along 30A

We were rained in all day Monday. The flash flood weather alert on my phone kept going off. Maya riddled me with random questions about hurricanes. I assured her that we were safe.

The rainy day was a pleasant surprise. We laid around the condo, about it watched TV, dosage read books, played games, napped and talked about all sorts of topics. It was lovely. We ventured out for lunch at Seagrove Market Cafe. I had the fried grouper sandwich which Garden & Gun magazine ranked on their “100 things to eat before you die” list. 2015-09-28 13.22.22-1Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday brought better weather, so we hit the beach. Maya was so happy. I love to watch her play and be so carefree. She made new friends that shared her enthusiasm for the surf. She named her boogie board Phoenix. 2015-09-30 15.37.00-12015-09-29 15.16.06Quinn wasn’t a big fan of the sand, but she enjoyed herself nonetheless. She is always happy. 2015-09-29 14.46.16-1A whole week with my kids and husband was such a treat! 2015-09-29 15.58.57-12015-09-29 17.59.252015-09-29 17.30.20-1We are back home now and back to our normal schedules. My post vacation depression is starting to creep in, but I’m doing my best to keep it at bay. It was a glorious fall break.
I gained two pounds last week and it was worth every bite.

The Fire Driven Life — a review

I received a complementary copy of The Fire Driven Life for review purposes. However, and all opinions stated here are my own.

If you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, shop you know that I love to cook and try healthy new recipes. I received a review copy of Vanessa Chamberlin’s new book The Fire Driven Life and was quickly drawn in by the beautiful photography and easy to follow flow of the book. IMG_0853Food is more than just fuel to Vanessa. She says, gastritis “…I began to see every healthy meal as a statement of self-love. Simply put, I recognized that I loved myself enough to pursue the highest level of self-care. This was a life-changing revelation for me.” Vanessa believes that nutrition is the foundation of well-being. She calls her food philosophy the PlantFire diet – every healthy meal and snack reinforces your love for yourself and that “from there, you can continue to strengthen and build on this new foundation in other aspects of your life.” FullSizeRender(1)The book is organized well and contains not only details on her vegan eating plan, but guidance on food shopping, exercise, stress management and more. It’s a well-rounded lifestyle plan.

Since I eat hummus almost every day, I made the Red Roasted Pepper Hummus. It was easy (whipped it up in my Vitamix) and delicious. IMG_0846Even though I will probably NEVER be a vegan, there are several other recipes in the book that I look forward to trying out — especially the Holiday Brussels Sprouts made with cranberries and walnuts.
