Do you know what happens when you sleep?

Leesa mattress

Did you know there are actually some techniques to get the best sleep possible? Whether you hit a full REM cycle or take a ten minute cat nap, it’s important to understand what goes on in your sleep.

A study done by Consumer Reports says that 68% of Americans struggle with sleep at least once a week. That’s approximately 164 million people. For Better Sleep Month last month, Leesa (an online mattress company) made it their mission to reduce this number. They developed this cool infographic about sleep that they asked me to share.  Continue reading “Do you know what happens when you sleep?”

Keto — Month One

Keto recipe

2016 has been a hard year on me. First my dog of over 16 years died in mid-February and it went down hill from there. Most of that was self-inflicted like binging on election news, physician but still, click I suffered mentally, order emotionally and physically this year. About a month ago, I decided to pull myself out of the mire. I started yoga. I turned off CNN. A friend introduced me to the ketogenic diet (aka keto) which is high fat/low carb.

As a former researcher (just left my FDA job last week), I had heard of this diet and it’s benefits. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is going lots of interesting and positive studies regarding the keto diet and obesity, Alzheimer’s, cancer and more. (Just Google “ketogenic and NIH study” to read for yourself.) But personally, I have never succeeded on any diet. I am not disciplined. But my friend assured me that this one is sustainable because the high fat content is very filling.

My start was rocky. I have had a long-time addiction to sugar in particular. For me, walking into Community Bakery is like an alcoholic walking into the liquor store. It’s so hard. But slowly over the past few weeks, I’ve already kicked my sugar habit. I didn’t think it was possible. No longer does a cookie or piece of buttered bread tempt me like a druggie needing a fix. Sure, I want it, but I have the power to say no. The keto diet is really working for me.

I won’t get into the details of the keto plan — there are many more knowledgeable folks on the web for that. But I can share some of my favorite recipes here. Because y’all know I love to cook, and on the keto plan I get to cook with bacon, fatty cuts of meat (which are usually cheaper than other cuts of meat), avocado, coconut oil, low-carb veggies like cauliflower and broccoli, and cheese.

Instant Pot Crack Chicken (modified a bit)

Almond Flour Pound Cake

Peanut Butter Cup Fat Bombs

Low Carb Zuppa Toscana Soup (I use my electric pressure cooker to make in a jif) — My whole family LOVES this soup.

Bacon Cheeseburger Bombs (I bake in oven instead of on grill — increase cooking time to 25 min)

Fat Bomb Hamburger Soup

Broccoli Cheese Soup in a Pressure Cooker (weekly recipe — my kids LOVE it too)

White Chocolate Latte Rocket Fuel (my morning “breakfast” — holds me over til lunch!)

I have lots of other recipes on my Low Carb Life Pinterest board — haven’t even tried the majority, so I’ll let you know which ones I like best as this progresses.

I feel so much better over the past few weeks — plus I’ve dropped about 8 pounds without feeling deprived. I look forward to what 2017 has in store for me as I continue this keto journey.

If you have any great keto recipes, please share in comments section. Thank you!

6 Unexpected Infused Water Ideas

fruit-infused water

I drink a lot of water. These recipes remind me of the delicious water in the lobby of The Chancellor Hotel in Fayetteville, approved Arkansas. This post is provided by KMR Communications. I like the content, page so I’m posting it here for future reference.

While most dermatologists and doctors preach the benefits of drinking more water, water gets boring. Perhaps you’ve done just about everything to make your plain glass of water more enjoyable. If you’re running out of ideas and are tempted to reach for a caffeinated beverage you’re not alone. We talked to the experts who gave us six fresh infused water recipes that will pack a punch of flavor and add health and beauty benefits to your H2O! If you’re new to infused water it’s easy. Chop up the ingredients, let them sit over night in your water pitcher and sip your way to healthy hydration inside and out.

  1. Mango Ginger: This combo might seem weird, but adding the health benefits of ginger and the antioxidant power of mangoes is a surprisingly tasty mix! “Mangoes contain so many vitamins that help boost your immune system. It has antioxidants that maintain youthful glowing skin and aid in the production of blood cells,” says Dr. Christopher Calapai D.O. an anti-aging expert and long-time health advisor to the New York Rangers hockey team.  “Ginger is also helpful in fighting infection, has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, may reduce muscle aches, and helps digestion,” adds Dr. Calapai.
  1. Grapefruit Rosemary: Recently rosemary was found to be the main ingredient eaten by residents of an Italian village with one of the highest populations of people who live past 100! “Rosemary improves circulation and sends more blood to the brain which is linked to greater concentration and potentially reduces risk of Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Calapai. Grapefruit is not only delicious but it’s a natural fat burner, boosts metabolism and cleanses your liver.
  1. Melon Mix: Cut up watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe chunks and throw into your water over night. “This melon variety tastes great and is amazing for your skin,” says Dr. Kally Papantoniou board certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. “Melons are immensely hydrating, meaning more hydration per cup of water. They are also chock-full of antioxidants that keep skin clear plus they contain vitamins that promote collagen production which helps skin cell turnover.”
  1. Citrus Mint: Pick your favorite citrus fruits, cut up into slices and add some crushed mint.  “Adding mint to your water is not only extra refreshing but also improves digestive health and can speed up your metabolism,” says Dr. Calapai. “Mint actually contains salicylic acid, a potent acne fighter,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “It’s also well known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties which work to calm irritation both on your skin or internally,” she adds.
  1. Cucumber Lavender: “The reason so many spas use cucumber based treatments is because it contains many skin friendly minerals like magnesium, potassium and silicon,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “This mix is especially healthy,” says Dr. Calapai “Cucumbers are powerful detoxifiers, flushing out any waste in your system. Adding crushed lavender to the mix not only adds a beautiful aroma but can also help digestion as lavender contains polyphenols that reduce bad bacteria in your gut, making your system run smoother,” he explains.
  1. Pineapple Coconut Water
This one is almost cheating… almost. Get your favorite store bought raw coconut water and refrigerate over night with large chunks of pineapple. The coconut-pineapple flavor combo is delicious and reminiscent of a piña colada without all the sugar and calories. Although this is not pure H2O, coconut water contains electrolytes which plain water does not, which rehydrate you in record time. “Pineapple is yet another fruit that aids in collagen production,” says Papantoniou “This is not just great for beautiful skin, collagen also has a major role in bone health and tissue repair.”

Clearly there are benefits to keeping hydrated. Water does not have to be boring, it can be delicious. Drink up!

What I have in common with Beyonce?

I was given free samples of this product for review purposes, story but all opinions are my own.

What do Beyoncé, Miranda Kerr, Elton John, The Pope, President Obama, Bill Gates, Martha Stewart, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Kelly Ripa, Janet Jackson and Ray Kurzweil all have in common? They’ve all gone on the record to say that they drink alkaline water! Many athletes and celebrities are attracted to the benefits of an alkaline diet as balanced body pH supposedly results in greater energy, more restful sleep, improved digestion and fewer colds according to some medical authorities.

alkaline_water-charter-kangen-water4

Alkaline88, www.alkaline88.com, favored by Brande Roderick and Tim Tebow, achieves its 8.8 pH level through a state-of-the-art, completely chemical-free scientific process. They sent me several bottles of their water to try out for myself. Alkaline88 is really clean tasting, even though it contains Himalayan pinksalt which has 88 minerals and trace elements including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron.

IMG_5086

But is alkaline water better for us? The jury on that one is still out. However, if it’s something you want to try out, you can buy Alkaline88 on Amazon. It gets great reviews on there (4 out of 5 stars). Athletes really seem to like it. It’s too early to tell whether I see any improvements or not, but it does taste really good.

Alkaline88 comes in several sizes: 3 liter, 1 gallon, 700ml and 1 liter bottles. It can be found nationally at stores like Albertson’s, Safeway, 7-Eleven, Fry’s and Whole Foods Markets.

Jumping feet first into Paleo

Several of my friends are doing the Whole30 thing, misbirth so I decided to do it too. I have always had a problem with sugar, web so this 30 day strict Paleo plan could be the answer to finally ending this love/hate relationship with sweets.

I mean — who needs pasta when you can eat this???

So I know the key to success will be planning my meals in advance and grocery shopping for only those ingredients. I am a sucker for any sweets in the house, glands so I just have to keep them out.

Genetic testing with 23andMe

*This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of my links, pathopsychology your price will remain the same, page but I will receive a small commission.

I’ve been told that I’m part Irish, Scottish and Native American. But I am really? I’ve wanted to research my genetics for a while now. Also I have two adopted daughters. I know their birth mom, but she was also adopted, so we don’t have any of her extended health history and nothing from the birth fathers. So at-home DNA testing to the rescue!

I chose 23andMe — the first and only genetic service available directly to consumers that includes reports that meet FDA standards. They can help people understand what their DNA says about their health, traits and ancestry through detailed reports, tools and more. And more than one million people have spit with 23andMe using our in-home saliva kit. I should have our kits in next week, and then it’s 6-8 weeks to get results back.

I’m not doing my youngest daughter yet since I doubt I can get her to spit into the tube, so I’m starting with just me and my six year old. Stay tuned for a full review of how the process went with 23andMe and what I think of the reports.

There’s an incredible story in your DNA – the history of you and your family. Discover your DNA today at 23andMe.com.

Become a Fat-Burning Machine: A book review

I received a free copy of this book for review purposes, viagra but all opinions here are my own.

Fat Burning MachineLast week I received a copy of Become a Fat-Burning Machine: The 12-Week Diet by Mike Berland. Mike isn’t a doctor or a dietician. He’s a pollster and analytics expert. He wanted to know why certain foods help the body lose weight and why others cause the body to store fat. Berland assembled a team of experts to find verifiable data behind the science and mindset of weight loss exercise and nutrition. The Fat-Burning Machine points to metabolic syndrome as the hidden driver of America’s body weight epidemic.

“Finally, I’m a Fat-Burning Machine and I’m not afraid of ‘falling off’ the wagon. There is no wagon. No fad. No extreme protocol. Just a way of life that combines science and practical strategies.”

I found the book to have sound nutritional and exercise advice. It didn’t really reveal much new information for me, but I like the way it was presented. Berland tells of his own weight struggle even as a marathoner. He rejects some popular ideas about weight loss and exercise such as eating fat will make you fat. His plan is simple — each meal should have a protein, low-carb vegetables, a fat option, and a very small serving of carbs (rice, grains, beans, fruit).

There are sample menus and 43 pages of recipes to try. I really like the section on dining out. There are even suggestions on what to order at fast food restaurants.

The part that is hard for me is the exercise section. Berland admits that he loves getting up early and going for a run. I’d rather go to the dentist. But I know this is an area that I need to work on. He suggests incorporating exercise into your life and do the things you love to do, so it will be pleasurable — “not just a grim routine you have to do.” So for me, it’s walking. I enjoy going for a long walk. It’s just hard for me to make the time to do it.

Free Week of Healthy Kids Inc Meal PlannerBerland describes something called “Miracle Intervals” which are short bursts of intense exercise followed by long recovery periods — a core component to the Fat-Burning Machine plan. He also suggests morning workouts on an empty stomach to force cells to produce energy via fat oxidation instead of using easy-to-access glucose from a recent meal. He modifies this based on the length and intensity of your workout.

The book outlines some very simple, no equipment required, strength-training fat-burning exercises for beginners. There are more advanced exercises (but still relatively simple) that can be done at home or in a gym with hand weights and an exercise ball. Each week of the 12 week plan has a different exercise routine. I like the variety and how each week builds on the week before.

I look forward to starting this plan next week. We’ll see how it goes. I don’t have a great track record for following any plan exactly, but this one seems very achievable.

Squatty Potty Review

I received a free Squatty Potty for review purposes, more info but all opinions here are my own.

After first hearing about the Squatty Potty from a friend on Facebook, abortion I was intrigued. I reviewed their website and the information seems legit. Then I saw one in my physical therapist’s office, treatment and she told me about it’s benefits. I was sold.

Now I’ve used the Squatty Potty in my home for the past week, and I really do like it. It makes going #2 so much easier. My 6-year-old likes it too. It’s especially good for her because the toilet is still a bit large for her, so this really helps. If you have issues with elimination, hemorrhoids, weak pelvic floor, etc., I think you should look into getting one. They aren’t expensive or intrusive. squatty potty squatty potty
